AN 11-year-old schoolboy has shown he is "one to watch" after his design for a giant eye sculpture won a top London award.

Arthur Redhead, from St Benedict's School, Ealing, was second in the London-wide competition to create a design for the empty fourth plinth in the north-west corner of Trafalgar Square.

Arthur, who is in year six at the school, designed an "intriguing" giant eyeball watching over the square.

He said: "The idea just came to me as I started drawing. I thought of the eye watching you and reckoned that people would wonder why it was there."

Arthur's art teacher, Rachel Gray, added: "We chose Arthur's as the winning entry from St Benedict's School, because it was full of intrigue. His exhibit would spark off conversations."

The awards were presented at City Hall earlier this month by artist Marc Quinn, whose sculpture currently occupies the spot.

The plinth was originally designed by Sir Charles Barry in 1841 but remained empty because there were insufficient funds for the planned statue.
