A group of volunteers raised thousands of pounds for a local hospice with a free bhajan evening.

300 people listened to the blissful bhajan sounds at Claremont High School on Saturday, September 17, donating nearly £3,000 to St Luke’s Hospice in the process.

A bhajan is a devotional song, often with a spiritual or religious theme, sung in a regional Indian language.

There were performances by St Luke’s sound therapist Alan Watts, and the Soul Sounds from the Simply Jamming Group sangs bhajans on the night.

Attendees also enjoyed food donated by Mayurs Catering and heard at first hand the difference St Luke’s care made to one family.

Many young people from the Young Lohana Society helped to promote the event as well as volunteer on the night.

St Luke’s volunteer and event organiser Chandni Sejpal said: “It was an amazing event bringing the community together for an evening not to be forgotten. The bhajans sung by Soul Sounds and Alan Watts were brilliant.

“It created harmony bringing everyone together to support such an important cause that effects so many.

“The event was an opportunity for me and my family to remember our loved ones that we have lost by celebrating their life, by joining in the blissful bhajans and devotional music. I am very thankful to St Luke's Hospice for being such a great support in our community.

“The volunteers from the hospice and the Young Lohana Society were incredible, the food donated by Mayur's was great and Claremont High School was a perfect venue for the event. Overall it was a huge success and I am looking forward to the next event.”
