People living in South Harrow say the indoor market is ‘going down the pan’.
The indoor market in Northolt Road South Harrow is full of retail units and has been part of the community for years.

Neighbours living near the market have noticed the recent increase in rubbish, outside in the street and near the entrances.

Traders noted that waste not been collected for two weeks.

The South Harrow community matters social media group has expressed its concerns, as the bins often overflow, and waste is overflowing into the nearby streets.

A washing machine and a microwave were left outside near the market only a few days ago.

Calls are now being made for CCTV cameras to be installed outside the market.

Fly-tipping is a big problem in Harrow, as in 2014-15, there were 7,072 incidents reported costing the local authority almost £1 million in investigations and clearance.

A campaign to tackle the issue has been launched, and Harrow businesses can learn how to manage waste safely with ‘right waste, right place’.

A national survey under the same name, revealed that 59 per cent of small and medium-sized businesses in London and the South East didn’t know where all their waste goes when it leaves site.

Over a third of businesses admitted to not being sure whether they completed or kept essential waste transfer notes, a key requirement.

By not complying, businesses risk waste falling into the hands of criminals, leading to environmental, health and safety risks through fly-tipping and illegal disposal.

However, people living nearby are still unsure as to whether it is market or residential waste.

Max Quagliozzi, manager of south Harrow market said: “We are independent and we have a private collection.

“The rubbish is now cleared and it was a problem with the company not with us.”
The Times Series has contacted Simple Waste Solution company for a comment.
