A Stanmore gardening group is bidding to bag a massive cash boost through a supermarket initiative.

The Bernays Gardens is a secluded public garden near Uxbridge Road. A small group of community volunteers from Stanmore are working hard to restore the gardens into a place where everyone living and working can go to enjoy the peace and beauty it offers.

The Bernays Gardens Community Group has made it through to the second round of voting in the Tesco “Bags of Help” initiative, which sees grants of £12,000, £10,000 and £8,000 – all raised from the 5p bag levy – being awarded to environmental and green space projects.

“Being able to access this local garden – open to the whole community – is something we feel is essential,” said community group chair Vicky Seco.

“Having a safe, beautiful space to relax, unwind and enjoy nature is something we all feel passionately about.

“Our intention is to enhance this tranquil oasis of calm in the middle of a busy thoroughfare.”

Next month, shoppers are being invited to vote for who they think should receive the prizes at their nearest Tesco store.

Shoppers can vote in stores from October 31 until November 13 using a token given to them at the checkout each time they shop.

Three groups in each of Tesco’s 416 regions have been shortlisted to receive the cash award, which is a joint venture between the supermarket giant and community charity Groundwork.
