SCORES of young Jonny Wilkinson wannabes are being introduced to the rough and tumble sport in a free trial by Hanwell Rugby Football Club.

Hanwell RFC, which trains at Trailfinders Sportsclub in Ealing, is trying out a new Hanwell Minis group on Sundays in Elthorne Park.

Since starting three weeks ago they have introduced rugby to more than 80 three to eight-year-old girls and boys.

Eddie Johnson, Hanwell Minis' administrator and coach, said it was not too late to join and there had been an equal intake of girls and boys.

“I have played hockey, a female dominated sport in this country, and it was far more dangerous!” he said.

“Obviously for the minis we run the sessions non-contact but even with the full game, there is no reason for girls not to be involved with contact sport."

He added: “Feedback has been outstanding - people are keen for the hedgehogs to continue.

“We all feel it is important to get children playing sports for many reasons - promoting physical activity for lifelong health, social skills and boosting self esteem.

“The great thing about rugby is that it promotes masses of teamwork, communication and a wide variety of motor skills.”

Hanwell Minis, sponsored by Get Fit With Zahra and Bevells Property, are meeting every Sunday at 11.15am for the next three weeks.
