NEWLY-ELECTED MP Rupa Huq got a taste of street food and artisan produce when she popped along to Ealing’s thriving W5 Food Market on Sunday.

The Labour MP, who won the Ealing Central and Acton seat from the Tories the previous week, took part in the festivities, along with shoppers, who enjoyed live music, children’s’ craft activities and a range of eclectic food from jerk chicken to organic juices.

Held on the first and third Sunday of each month outside Ealing Town Hall, the food market is the brainchild of Ealing resident Kate McKenzie and, since launching earlier this year, it has grown in popularity.

In a show of cross-party harmony, Tory councillor Alex Stafford joined Rupa, while Ealing’s cabinet member for health, Cllr Hitesh Tailor and his fellow East Acton ward councillor Kieron Gavan, also joined in the fun.

Rupa said: “This is a great family event that really confirms how Ealing is on the up as a shopping destination, which doesn’t just mean chain stores. It’s a slice of Borough Market in Ealing W5.”

The latest W5 Food Market coincided with Love Your Local Market fortnight (May 13-27), led by the National Association of British Market Authorities, to highlight the importance markets play in the heart of their communities.

Organiser Kate said: “Markets are valuable community assets and provide a focal point for the area. Ours is fast becoming the place to be in Ealing on a Sunday.”

Subsidised pitches, free use of gazebos and advice on how to get started are all available to food businesses and community groups in the Ealing area.

The scheme has been trialled with three local firms: Hook & Cleaver in South Ealing/Pitshanger, Hanwell’s Cheeky Chutneys and Ahlam’s Cupcake Corner in Southall. Anyone wishing to apply should contact info@eat-me-drink-me.co.uk for details.

W5 Food Market returns outside Ealing Town Hall, Uxbridge Road, on Sunday, June 7, from 11am-3.30pm.
