THE 70th anniversary of VE-Day – the end of the World War Two in Europe - was commemorated with a ceremony on the steps of Ealing Town Hall.

Police stopped traffic on Uxbridge Road on Friday to allow the crowds to observe a two-minute silence, led by council leader Julian Bell.

Cllr Bell said: “I remember my own father telling us about the end of the war and how people came together in the street to celebrate.

“An electrician who lived in his row of council houses rigged up lights in the street to mark the victory and the end of five years of blackouts.

“The jubilation as Churchill announced the end of the war was tinged with sadness, of course, at the thought of all the lives lost.”

The borough also recently honoured those who gave their lives for their country by reviewing all local war memorials to keep them in good condition as part of the borough’s historic walks.
