DO Ealing people have confidence in the police?

The level can be tracked for the first time at both a borough and neighbourhood level through two new online tools launched by London’s Deputy Mayor for Policing And Crime, Stephen Greenhalgh.

The Confidence Dashboard and Neighbourhood Confidence Comparator allow residents to see how well their police are performing, compared to other similar areas, and also which Londoners, in terms of age and ethnicity, have least confidence in the police.

The Confidence Dashboard highlights an east-west confidence divide, with those living in west London generally reporting a more favourable attitude toward the police.

In Ealing overall confidence in the police is 67 per cent, the highest being 86 per cent in Richmond and the lowest 49 per cent in Newham.

Boroughs are made up of a wide variety of neighbourhoods and simple borough comparisons do not give the full picture of confidence levels.

Confidence differs across Ealing’s four neighbourhoods, being 67 per cent in Acton, 69 in Ealing, 70 in Greenford and Northolt and 63 in Southall.

The Neighbourhood Confidence Comparator groups London’s 108 policing neighbourhoods into 12 types, depending upon dozens of economic, demographic and social indicators.

Acton and Ealing are classified as ‘aspirational bustle’, along with nine other neighbourhoods, with confidence ranging from 58 per cent in Haringey West to 78 in South Fulham.

Greenford-Northolt and Southall are classified as ‘settled mutli-ethnic’. Seven other neighbourhoods come under this type and the confidence levels range from 54 per cent in Redbridge South to 73 in Feltham.

Grouping neighbourhoods in this way makes it easier to see clearly which neighbourhoods are alike.

It is hoped that police leaders from low-confidence neighbourhoods can look to similar neighbourhoods that score higher on confidence and borrow ideas for how to improve engagement.

Mr Greenhalgh said: “The Mayor and I have been clear - cutting crime is not enough, we need to see a boost in Londoners' confidence.

“Right now in Ealing, confidence in the police is not as high as we would like, though some parts of the borough have higher scores.

“We hope these tools will be used by local police leaders to make fair comparisons between similar neighbourhoods in order to learn from areas with higher levels of confidence.”
