FIXED penalty notices of £80 are to be issued by Ealing Council to people caught spitting in public.
The issue was raised at a public meeting in Southall this week.
People wanted to know about Ealing’s plans to tackle what many view as an anti-social and unhygienic problem.
Council leader Bell Julian Bell, interviewed on ITV’s London Tonight, said: "We have already issued a number of fixed penalty and warning notices in Ealing.
"I am hoping these will make people change their habits. It certainly should, as it’s disgusting."
Ealing, along with Enfield and Waltham Forest boroughs, has made spitting a littering offence.
People can report spitting and other littering offences on the council's online 'report it' page on www.ealing.gov.uk/reportit Alternatively, you can call the council on 0208 825 5000.
