HANWELL Station will be fully step-free ahead of the opening of Crossrail in 2019.

This means that every one of the 37 Crossrail stations within London will be step-free, making them more accessible to the disabled.

The news is welcomed by the Labour Party in Ealing, who campaigned for this in their manifesto for this year’s borough elections.

“It just wasn’t right that Hanwell would be the only Crossrail station in the whole of west London not to have a lift,” said Cllr Bassam Mahfouz.

“Another victory, against all the odds, for accessibility means those with disabilities, parents with buggies and those accessing Heathrow with bags of luggage will be just some of the people benefiting.”

A total of £19m will be available to pay for improvements to Hanwell, as well as Seven Sisters, Maryland and Manor Park.

The move is welcomed by Whizz Kidz, a charity that aims to transform the lives of disabled children.

Chief executive Ruth Owen said: “For young disabled people to fulfil their potential, being able to travel safely and independently is absolutely paramount.”

Crossrail will be fully operational by 2019 and will carry an estimated 200 million passengers every year.
