ENGINEERS of the future are being discovered in Ealing by Heathrow Airport as part of the Heathrow Primary School Challenge.

Year Six students at Our Lady of the Visitation Catholic School, Greenford Road, were put through their this morning (Friday) by civil engineer Jeremy King.

The children were tasked with building ‘airport terminals’ out of newspaper while Ealing North MP Stephen Pound watched on.

“When we see Terminal Six, let it be designed and inspired by Our Lady of the Visitation,” said Mr Pound.

“It’s great to see the kids taking part in constructive team building, as well as airport building.”

Mr King, who lives in Hanwell, runs the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) in Schools programme. His visit to the Greenford school was his 299th school visit over eight years of running the programme.

In this time, he has instructed more than 18,000 students of all ages in the five boroughs surrounding Heathrow and says he is happy to continue for as long as possible.

He said: “The funny thing is I’m not bored of it. The kids just never cease to surprise you.”

The event aims to get children thinking about careers at Heathrow Airport, which boasts 53% of its workforce as local residents.

Many of the children were clearly inspired and Gabriel, 10, told me he found the event fun, but hard work.

Gabriel’s eyes lit up when he was asked how the activity compares to usual school.

“It’s definitely better than literacy,” he said.
