A GUNNERSBURY schoolboy has been awarded a football scholarship in America.
Tommy Cameron, 18, will fly out to Texas this week to begin pre-season training before joining the Lubbock University men’s team in September.
Tommy, who recently completed his A-levels, was chosen by InTuition Scholarships, a UK-based programme which helps students from all over the world earn scholarships to American universities.
Harry Newton, from InTuition Scholarships, said: “Tommy was offered a place due to his good athletic ability and his academic track record.”
Former North Greenford United midfielder Tommy was offered the place after attending the 2013 InTuition Scholarships Sports Showcase in Florida, where he was introduced to universities offering the scholarship.
After being inundated with offers from universities, he eventually settled on Lubbock.
Tommy said: “They made me an offer that reduced the tuition fees and my living costs by over 50%. I accepted and I’m off – it has all happened so fast. I can't wait to get out there!”
Tommy will train and compete full-time while he completes a degree in sport science.
He said: “This is an amazing opportunity to combine my degree and take my game to the next level.”
