A CHARITY which aims to provide support, friendship and practical help to dementia sufferers in Hillingdon is appealing for new volunteers.
Hillingdon Befriending Scheme, run by the Royal Voluntary Service, matches people suffering from dementia with a volunteer who visits them regularly in their own home.
Visitors can help with a range of tasks, such as paying bills and shopping, as well as providing company and a friendly face.
Natalie Blassius, who runs the service, said volunteers were essential in helping to reduce the social isolation of people with dementia.
“We’re looking for people with a friendly personality,” she said. “We want them to be able to offer companionship and emotional support. They can pop in for a chat or go for a walk or grab lunch together.”
Set up during the London Olympics, the service has continued to grow, with 20 volunteers providing support to 35 people in the last year.
With many of the current crop being students, who will return home at the end of the month, Natalie is keen to attract as much new support as possible.
“Volunteering is good for everyone,” she said. “Ours come from all walks of life and our role is to match them to a client and make sure both sides have a beneficial experience.”
All volunteers must be over 18 and able to commit to a minimum of one hour a week. No prior experience is necessary and full training can be provided.
Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer should contact Natalie Blassius on 02089335322.
