STUDENTS from Ealing, Hammersmith and West London College won the award for Outstanding Sporting Initiative at the Times Educational Supplement Further Education Awards, hosted by Jo Brand.

The award was based on the growth of sporting activity at the college, hailed as extraordinary by the judges.

There was an increase of 500%, from 678 participating in sport in 2009 to 4,398 last year.

An initial grant of £1,000 sparked the increase, and the spirit of London 2012 inspired students.

Dede Foley, manager of the college sports team, said: “This project is all about opening up sport to staff, students and the local community. The uptake across the college community has been phenomenal.”

Judges were impressed by the college’s creative efforts to maximise a small amount of funding and encourage learners to pursue a healthier lifestyle.

The TES FE Awards, now in their third year, were held at the Park Plaza, Westminster.
