A GROUP of young people volunteered their holiday time to help improve Gunnersbury Park on Tuesday.

The youngsters, from Acton High School, Ealing Council’s Youth Action and Horizons projects, Youth Link and the Living Room Youth Club, helped out with a range of activities as part of the ongoing regeneration of the park and its buildings.

They built bat and bird boxes, planted bulbs and cleared the kitchen garden.

They also built a bug hotel, using wooden pallets and bark chips, providing a new habitat for insects which help to pollinate the flowers and provide natural pest control.

The day was part of the council’s Youth Action programme which encourages young people to get involved in local projects and take action on important issues.

Ion Wisdom, 16, from Acton High School, said: “Days like this with my friends are fun and a great achievement. It will also be good for my university application.”

Fayza Alahyan, 16, from Ealing Youth Action, said: “I’m part of the Ealing Youth Council. I was a bit quiet when I first joined, but activities like this have brought me out of my shell. I’m even thinking of running for Ealing youth mayor next year.”
