EALING have two projects in the final shortlist for the Local Government Chronicle Awards.

Northala Fields, beside the A40 at Northolt, which first opened in 2008, is in line for the Innovation Award.

It is home to the charity Get Hooked on Fishing, whose chief executive, Sarah Collins, said: “Northala Fields is an amazing community facility.

"The project provides many opportunities to work voluntarily and develop a real sense of community and 'ownership'.

“GHoF are beginning to help residents access the social, community, health-and-wellbeing benefits of angling.”

This £5.3m park was self-funded by converting waste from Wembley Stadium and Westfield shopping centre into four large featured mounds.

The Pathways pre-apprenticeship programme for youngsters aged 16-25 is hoping to win the Children's Services category.

Young people placed on the scheme are found through the youth offending team, the connexions service, social services and health services.

As trainees, they are paid to work in council departments and develop essential working skills.

This year, the LGC Awards had a record-breaking 640 entries.

Winners will be announced at the Grosvenor House Hotel on March 12.
