You reported that Ealing Council had pleaded guilty to health and safety offences which were committed when guttering fell at a school and seriously injured a child (03/08).

As the council signs and sends off the £15,000 cheque to pay the fine, has anyone reading the report given a thought to who gets the money, and who pays? Sadly, the money simply goes from one public purse to another, without compensating the child or his family.

Even more remarkably none of the financial burden falls on the councillors or senior managers who failed in their duty to maintain the school as a safe environment for children. No, it falls instead on you and me and the other council taxpayers in the borough, as the council cuts £15,000 worth of services we've already paid for, or claws it back through a bigger rise in council tax bills next year!
