Residents of a group of roads in Bedford Park are to be reconsulted on a controversial controlled parking zone after the council admitted the last survey was flawed.

The decision was made on Thursday last week at a meeting of the Acton Area Committee, after residents claimed that incorrect maps and misleading language in the consultation papers prevented a fair process.

It will be the fourth time the council has consulted Bedford Park residents on the controversial scheme.

The area's CPZ will go ahead as scheduled, with the exception of St Alban's Avenue, Eridge Road, Bayham Road and Speldhurst Road, after a petition of 130 signatures was put together from residents living in those roads who were opposed to it and said their wishes hadn't been represented.

St Alban's Avenue resident Derek Jones, who presented the petition to the full council meeting on Tuesday last week, said three consultations had been carried out in his road in the 12 months up to May this year.

On the first two consultations in April and December 1999, residents in St Alban's Avenue and its adjoining roads voted against the scheme.

But despite the opposition shown, a further consultation was carried out in May this year, this time, Mr Jones claims, with misleading language and incorrect maps.

'People In St Alban's Avenue north of Wadhurst Road don't want the controlled parking zone, but it seemed from the maps in the third consultation that St Alban's Avenue wouldn't be included at all.

'The only parking pressure is at 7am and 10pm when the parking restrictions don't apply.'

He claimed the results of the third consultation were further distorted as residents were only given four days, including a weekend, to reply.

At Thursday's Acton Area Committee, Southfield councillors urged the council to reconsult. Residents applauded as Councillor Kieran Ryan said : 'If we believe in a democratic process then we have to reject the consultation thus far.'

A spokeswoman for Ealing Council said CPZs were especially important in the borough due to its high number of commuter stations.

The CPZ in St Albans Avenue was proposed to protect it from parking overflow caused from a CPZ introduced in neighbouring Hounslow.

Residents at the south end of St Alban's Road voted in favour of a CPZ for this reason and because they wanted to protect the road from commuters travelling to Turnham Green Tube station, which, in zone 2, is a favoured starting point for Ealing commuters wanting to save money on their tickets.

Ealing Council's spokeswoman added the council was reviewing its consultation policy and would be reporting the results of the new consultation back to the next Acton Area committee in the autumn.
