IT’s been a whirlwind year for one of the next big things in British comedy.

In the past 12 months, Josh Widdicombe has appeared as a regular on Channel 4’s live Friday night comedy series, The Last Leg, commentated live on the Paralympics and now has his own radio show.

Did he ever think his career would take off in such fashion? It seems he’s keeping his feet firmly on the ground.

Josh said: "Not in my wildest dreams. I never imagined I’d be standing in a hotel in Nottingham on the phone talking about coming to Wycombe."

Josh arrives with his stand-up tour at the Wycombe Swan this month, called 'Josh Widdicombe: The Further Adventures Of...’.

Having visited Wycombe before, he’s clued up on facts about the area.

However, this will be his first visit in his own right having appeared at comedy clubs in the area before now.

He said: "High Wycombe’s famous for chairs right? As a comedian you amass these weird little facts about places.

"The tour's title is partly sarcastic. I wanted to choose a title that didn’t mean anything specific.

"It’s basically me grumbling for an hour but I think the best comedy comes from life’s negatives. I think that if life was interesting it wouldn’t be funny at all."

He’s come a long way from working at the Guardian on their sports desk, a job he packed in to give comedy a go.

He said: "I used to work on the website as a low level sub-editor and not a very good one at that!

"I struggled working in an office and I wanted to be my own boss. I thought what can I do to get out of this?"

It all began with his first gig at Earl’s Court, where he entered a comedy competition and made it through the first round, encouraging him to pursue stand-up.

And it seems he’s never looked back in a comedy career which is now culminating in his first ever DVD tour, capturing the funniest moments of his time on the road.

Josh, voted FHM’s stand-up hero in 2010, is a regular on television panel shows and is looking forward to featuring on QI and Would I Lie To You in the next few months.

He said: "David Mitchell and maybe Sean Loch are the best people at panel shows but Frank Skinner was funny growing up.

"I enjoy his off the cuff remarks and I did an hour and a half show with him once where he said at least ten things funnier than I said."

Still, his time working with comedians Adam Hills and Alex Brooker on The Last Leg is top billing in his eyes.

He said: "It’s an absolute joy and it’s the best job I’ve ever had. It’s so much fun to work on."

Despite working late on Friday nights during the series, Josh was up early on the Saturday to present his new morning radio show on London’s XFM.

He lists Danny Baker as the best radio broadcaster around, and managed to speak to him on air when he was just 12 years old.

He said: "I do enjoy radio work as well as it’s less stressful than stand-up because there’s no audience and when there’s a silence you can just put a song on.

"Danny Baker is one of the few remaining people I would like to meet in life. If I ever did I think my life would be complete!"

As for long-suffering Wycombe Wanderers fans, Josh can relate to your pain too as a life-long supporter of fellow League two outfit Plymouth Argyle.

He said: "They are similar to Wycombe but Plymouth is a massive city so it is doubly frustrating. It’s depressing football."

Josh is playing at the Wycombe Swan on Friday May 17. Tickets are £14 and can be booked at www.wycombeswan.co.uk or via the ticket office on 01494 512000.
