Barnes named deputy Mayor
 |
| Richard Barnes AM has been named as deputy Mayor to Boris Johnson's |
A LOCAL politician is holding a double celebration after being made a deputy to the new Mayor of London.
Richard Barnes has been named the new statutory deputy Mayor by Mayor Boris Johnson, after he successfully retained his seat on the London Assembly as the member for Ealing and Hillingdon on Friday.
Mr Barnes, said: "It is amazing to be the deputy Mayor. I am extremely proud. My responsibilities will be community cohesion and regeneration. So overlooking everything that is happening across London alongside the Mayor."
"I will fully support the Mayor of London, in addressing the immense challenges facing London. Londoners deserve to live in a city we can all be proud of and I will work tirelessly to make the capital a better place to live and work for everyone.
"We all have the right to live in a safe, clean, prosperous city and every community plays a role in maximizing our city's success.
"It is an honour to have been appointed Deputy by the Mayor and I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to make a real difference to one of the greatest cities in the world. "
The role means Mr Barnes will fill in for the Mayor when he has a holiday or if he falls ill.

Now Barnes will get £90,954 for his deputy mayor role. Now that this is a key role within the GLA it is time for Richard to resign from Hillingdon Council because clearly it is difficult to divide time between the two positions. Hillingdon residents will know that that the two parts of their council tax are paying for this man - both in the GLA part and the Hillingdon Councillor's allowances.
Richard Barnes should resign immediatly.!

Jamie, do you think all councillors with senior jobs should resign or just Richard Barnes?
Personally, I think if they can manage their time to fulfil both roles we should encourage not discourage highflyers to remian as councillors. His experience at the Mayor's office could prove very helpful at Hillingdon Council.
It is the people who are not interested in fulfilling their council duties such as Virendra Sharma MP who should resign.

I agree with Paul Bostrom. Most councillors hold a day job, so this is not the issue.
If Richard Barnes attends council meetings regularly and takes an active role in them he's a good councillor and should stay. If he doesn't attend and take an active role, he's a bad councillor and should go.
On this basis, Virendra Sharma is a bad councillor and should go.
