Tory by-election victory hailed

THE leader of Ealing Council has hailed the Tory victory in a local by-election.

Councillor Jason Stacey, the leader of the ruling Conservative group, said he is "very pleased" with Councillor Maureen Crosby's victory in the Greenford Broadway by-election.

Cllr Crosby overcame a previous Labour majority to claim the seat in the May 1 election by 20 votes.

Cllr Stacey said: "I'm very pleased with the result. It was always going to be a close one. In 2006 Labour won here by 600 votes, so we can say this is now a marginal, which gives us confidence to fight on.

"We have to look at this result alongside the London Assembly and Mayoral elections."

Councillor Julian Bell, a senior Labour representative, claimed the result was good for Labour in the circumstances.

He said: "It's obviously very disappointing for us to have lost by such a narrow margin, but I think it's an extremely good performance given the mood.

"I do not think it's an endorsement of the Tory council or the Tory candidate. It's essentially the same result as 2006, but they were just over the line and not us this time."

Tim Mutagh, the Labour candidate for the seat, said: "I think we have an excellent chance in two years time, and it is encouraging at the moment given the results across the rest of the country it shows there is a good solid base for us here.

"I hope we can win the seat back and serve the people of Greenford again, and it is close enough to keep it interesting."

Cllr Stacey's got his numbers all wrong. In 2006 Cllr Nirwal won by just 8 votes for Labour. With the Tories now winning by just 20 votes Greenford Broadway remains a very marginal seat and very winnable for Labour in 2010!

Julian, not with a much lower turnout at the local elections it wont be!

Tories will take all three seats at the next election.

Julian, if your collegue Virendra Sharma continues to embarrass the local Labour party by only turning up to one council meeting every six months, it will be very unlikely that Labour will win any seats at the next election.
