Perivale road 'an accident trap'
NEIGHBOURS of a school where a four-year-old was killed after being hit by a car say traffic is a big problem.
Sushil Sharma, a neighbour of the school for 35 years, called Thirlmere Avenue in Perivale, "an accident trap" because of the number of cars that flood into the road at the beginning and end of the school day.
He said: "There are so many people, so many cars at that time, something like this was bound to happen.
"It gets very difficult to move around at that time of day, with parents reversing and trying to turn around."
Catarina Caridade, a pupil at St John Fisher Roman Catholic Primary School, died on Thursday, March 13, when she was hit by a Volkswagen people carrier.
She was crossing Thirlmere Avenue with her mother, at around 3.20pm, after leaving school for the day.
Pensioner Mary Cunningham, who has lived in the road for 19 years, said there does not appear to be a solution to the problem.
She said: "It has always been congested down here, it is something we have had to learn to live with.
"But you get an accident like this and you wonder what could be done.
"There are a large number of cars, in the morning and at the end of school, but there is not a lot you can do because parents have to take their children to and from school."
Floral tributes have been placed on a fence near to the spot where the accident happened, as the school and local community try to come to terms with her death.
Catarina's funeral was held on Wednesday.

There is a solution. Do everything possible to get these parents to use alternative means to get their little darlings to school.
A residents parking zone would be a good start.

Whilst I agree with you 100% I think in today's culture we are fighting a losing battle against laziness. I know people who will drive 200 yds rather than walk, and believe me I'm not exaggerating. It must take longer to get the car ready, expecially when you need to get children into it. Meanwhile, as ever, it's the children who suffer as in this terribly sad case.
Whilst I agree with you 100% I think in today's culture we are fighting a losing battle against laziness. I know people who will drive 200 yds rather than walk, and believe me I'm not exaggerating. It must take longer to get the car ready, expecially when you need to get children into it. Meanwhile, as ever, it's the children who suffer as in this terribly sad case.

We need a zero tolerance for car use around our schools.
No wonder so many kids are massive great porkers if their parents are so **** .
I know of many people who just will not walk.
Maybe double the tax on a second car, treble?
I really do not know.
I usd to live outside a very bust middle school and for 30 minutes a day it was chaos. Thanfully nobody was killed but there was violence amongst parents.
We need a zero tolerance for car use around our schools.

There’s always a solution to issues, just depends whether the govement wants to invest in these.
I live in the street where this happened and I agree with everyone it is a nightmare, ive been stuck in the street for more than 30 mins waiting for cars, people carrier to get though the street.
Suggested Solutions:
1. why not have a school bus which does certain runs to certain locations where it is safe to pickup children and for parents to drop off children in a wide space.
This will decrease traffic to and from road, avoid people getting in a hurry. Avoid accidents.
2. place Zebra and pelican crossings markings close to school entry places (not in front of anyone houses) this means no one should park there for drop off pickup, this ultimate provides safety via clear view of crossing and with no park cars.
This is a constant problem and really everyone who is in charge of a vehicle should think: [quote]WHAT ARE THE CONCENQENCES OF MY ACTION?[/quote]
No single person owns the roads and I think people forget that we have to share public places, this is what causes road rage and accidents.
Please just think about others, this is what makes us a community.

i live a few doors away where the accident happened. In these recent years, we have alot of lorries, vans parking along our streets - Rydal Crescent, Thirlmere Ave and Coniston Ave, most of them are not actually living in our streets, and there are at least 20+ vans parking along our residents area every night, and some of them just dummped their big van on the corner, gets very difficult to drive around, and not bother to consider the others, plus school run on the morning and afternoon are not going to help.....its the time for government/local council to do something about it
