Mayor claims safety improvement

THE Mayor of London has claimed millions of pounds of investment have improved safety on Ealing's streets.

Ken Livingstone today said 49 per cent fewer people have been killed or seriously injured during the last five years thanks to investment from his office and Transport for London.

He pointed to £4.9m for local transport improvements, £1.2m for local safety, and £630,000 for 20mph zones, announced in november last year, as significant investment in Ealing's road system.

He also pledged to lower the speed limit on all residential streets to 20mph to further improve safety.

What a shame that Ken wasted £3million of our money researching his white elephant of a tram scheme.

If he hadn't done that, then there would have been £3million more to spend on transpot improvements and safety.

Surely no-one can disagree that Ken has worked tirelessly to improve transport in the capital. The tram or something similar is bound to be back on the agenda one day as the growth in cars is unsustainable. The research will never be wasted. It's easy to slate Ken's ideas but to date no-one else has actually come up with any viable alternative to the ever-present blights of congestion and polution. Boris will simply avoid it - head in the sand stuff (just like the present Ealing council!)

It's undeniable that tranport in provision in London has got worse in the last 5 years - it's more crowded, slower, more expensive and there's more crime committed on public transport.

The tram is not an answer in Ealing and the research money has been wasted.

That money would have been much better spent on putting more stopping trains on the Southall to Paddington line and attempting to move traffic from the road onto the train.

You can criticise the current Ealing Council all you want (and I have to admit that something in me died on the day that I was forced to vote Tory by the previous Labour council's poor performance), but at least this Tory council hasn't wasted £250,000 of our public money by suing the audit commission to try and get a better rating.
