Four-year-old killed outside school

A FOUR-year-old girl has died after being hit by a car while she was crossing the road outside her Perivale primary school.

The youngster, named as Catarina Caridade, was hit by a Volkswagen people carrier as she crossed with her mother outside the St John Fisher Primary School, in Thirlmere Avenue, at around 3.20pm yesterday.

Paramedics arrived on the scene and rushed her to Central Middlesex Hospital, where she later died from multiple injuries.

The female driver of the car stopped at the scene and was breathalised by police as a matter of course.

A witness to the crash said: "It was really very distressing.

"Something needs to be done about that road as it is only a short road, with cars parked either side of it.

"I think it should be closed to vehicles altogether.

"A lot of children wander into the road without looking, and it is a miracle something like this has not happened before."

Without detracting from the grief felt by her family isn't it time parents, schools and the council took responsibility for teaching road safety -as reported "a lot of children wander into the road without looking" so don't always look to blame the motorist.

Our prayers go out to you all. I've just come from the mass held for Catarina - a beautiful service for a beautiful girl. You are all in our thoughts. Love Poppy's family (classmate of Ricardo) x

This is absolutely horrifying. It's time the police cracked down on selfish, lazy parents who insist on driving right up to the school gates. Why is nothing being done about this?

This was a tragic accident. There is no blame to be laid. Yes, the road does need to be made safer and yes, parents should teach their children correct road awareness. More impartantly parents should, simply, hold their childrens hands while they cross. I see so many who don't. It's such a simple act, yet many parents don't do it, and quite clearly, it could just save a life.

as i live on the neighbouring road Rydal Crescent i believe this is a very big issue as the school is rebuilding they should think about providing parking for parents and making a speed bump on the beginning of thermil avenue
