Ken Livingstone has spoken out in defence of controversial Muslim cleric Yusuf al-Qaradawi.
The mayor caused anger among gay rights campaigners on Monday when he invited the cleric to make a return visit to London.
Defending the action yesterday at his weekly press conference, the mayor said allegations about Mr al-Qaradawi's past statements were wrong.
The mayor said newspapaper stories saying Mr al-Qaradawi made homophobic and anti-semitic remarks reminded him of reports which still labelled him "Red Ken" and quoted his words from the past as though they were still current.
This week's reports about Mr Mr al-Qaradawi, he said, were not a reflection of his views.
"He is one of the leading voices for moderation among the world's leading Imams," the mayor said.
He added that Mr al-Qaradawi had been very clear in condemning homophobia and husbands striking their wives.
"Nothing in the media was reflected in the person I was dealing with," Mr Livingstone said.
