Biography

MP Since - 1997 Majority - 7,059 Born - 03/07/1948. Married, 1 son , 1 daughter.

Education - Hertford Grammar School; London School of Economics.

Previous Occupation - Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme; Seaman (1964-66); Bus conductor (1966-68); Hospital Porter (1969-79); Housing Officer (1984-97).

Personal Overview - Appears to have a Trade Union and religious background, with experience of Managing a Housing Association (providing social housing), he may therefore be supportive of other worthwhile causes. He is a Co-operative Party member, and is a Lay Reader at Church (RC). He seems to have an interest in planning issues, especially Town Planning. Prepared to speak his mind as a Labour backbencher, on subjects without prior-pager approval, he is one of the most talented of the 1997 intake to never gain Government office - an assertion unlikely to be disproved due to his maverick-tendency. More free-spirit than committed rebel he is media-friendly (along with colleagues such a Bob Marshall-Andrews) and is often sought for his interpretation of backbench attitudes. Resigned as a PPS in order to vote against the Government on authorising the renewal of the Trident Nuclear weapons system in March 2007. Was quickly reappointed on the accession of Gordon Brown to the Labour leadership.
