PANDA Players presented a lively version of that well known musical Godspell.

The very dramatic opening had the voice of God, followed by philosophers and great thinkers from the past dressed in black with white masks debating the relevance of religion and giving an interesting depiction of the Tower of Babel.

The basic set was enhanced with a choir sitting at the back of the stage, and the superb musicians situated at the side of the stage which is a clever device and means the cast are never overshadowed by the music.

The two main characters Jesus and John the Baptist/Judas gave very strong performances and with a small cast of disciples it enabled everyone to have a solo. The costumes were bright and colourful and perfectly depicted the era in which the musical was written.

Director choreographer David J Martin cleverly crafted the dancing which was enthusiastically performed throughout to suit the small stage perfectly.

Musical director Andrew Cowburn as well as being responsible for the music and playing piano, guitar and sax managed to perform on stage with such ease his versatility was great to watch.

This was a triumph for Panda Players and the audience enjoyed the show as much as those on stage performing.
