WHAT would persuade anyone out on a cold wet January evening? It must be the first night of the Lane End Players annual pantomime which is guaranteed to cheer up anyone’s evening.

I usually try to attend a matinee so that I can see the reaction of the children which is always a sign of how good a production is. I need not have worried as there were quite a few excited children who were happy to shout and clap to express their delight in the proceedings.

Well directed by Eve Berry there was the usual dame who was extremely good, the principal girl and boy and a delightful fairy and her sweet helper to cast their magic over the evil Demon King who was impressive.

The strong cast carried the story forward at a good pace. The chorus were enthusiastic and the singing and harmonies were entertaining.

The dastardly squire and his cohorts blended in well with the story and the various ghostly characters that the children love to shout ‘behind you’ at were well portrayed.

A special mention must go to the magic goose Priscilla who was extremely eloquent. Even though she had no spoken lines her miming was impressive.

The costumes were glorious and the clever lighting added to the overall effect.

It was a great evening’s entertainment and everyone seemed to leave the hall chatting excitedly about the good time they had had.
