12:23pm Friday 20th June 2008 in Theatre
By Melanie Dakin
A new show based on Aesop’s Fables by best-selling children’s author and former Children’s Laureate Michael Morpurgo comes to Trestle Arts Base in St Albans this Sunday. The fables have been cleverly adapted by Scamp Theatre for a modern audience while still retaining the essential themes, resulting in a witty all-round family entertainment. Three actors, six fables and a one-man band combine with a host of colourful characters and animals to re-tell the well-loved stories including The Hare and The Tortoise, The Goose that Laid the Golden Egg and The Boy Who Cried Wolf. The imaginative treatment, where wheelbarrows become donkeys and ladders turn into trees, gives the production added adult appeal, while the lively musical score provides an appropriate soundscape.
Aesop’s Fables is at Trestle Arts Base, Russet Drive, St Albans on Sunday, June 22 at 2pm. Tickets: 01727 850950, www.trestle.org.uk (£8-£10)
