With a striking mix of Persian and English heritage, young Barnet singer Raphaella is independently releasing her single Parallel Lines on her own label Koochulu next week.

The 23-year-old introduces traditional Persian instruments into her alternative pop sound, perfectly capturing her dual heritage.

She grew up surrounded by music, with jazz and classical music playing in her artist grandfather’s studios, her mother’s love of Ella Fitzgerald and Peggy Lee, and her father’s passion for traditional Persian music.

She is classically trained in piano and violin, which also informs the musical style she has developed for herself.

Raphaella is an accomplished musician and songwriter with a first class honours degree from the Institute of Contemporary Music, and was published within months of her graduation by indie publishing house Phrased Differently.

She has played alongside Texas, Joss Stone, Beverley Knight, Rizzle Kicks and Lianne La Havas.

  • Parallel Lines is released on Tuesday, February 25 at the Studio Theatre, Roundhouse, Camden. Raphaella will also be performing at Roundhouse Rising at the same venue on Friday, February 21 from 6pm. Details: raphaellamusic.co.uk
