Fenton House in Hampstead is well known for its broad range of collections and now you have the chance to learn about its musical instruments in greater detail – and hear them played too.

Every Wednesday until the beginning of October, a music collection specialist will guide you through an exploration of a different aspect of the early music collection and give you a demonstration. Hear one or more of the house’s early keyboard instruments played and learn about the musical world of the 15th to the 19th Centuries.

“Our aim is to introduce visitors to a whole new sound world,” says Apprentice curator Ben Marks, “and provide a historical context to our rare and special collections, which is one of the finest in the world. It’s been in use as a playing collection for almost a century.

“The collector, George Henry Benton Fletcher, began it in the early 20th Century. He established a musical salon for his friends to learn about the music of the past, and we continue that tradition to this day.”
