It's the month for l'escargot

Did you know that May is the best month to eat l'escargot? It's the month when they are at their very best. To celebrate, the French mark May 24 as National L'escargot day. Café Rouge in Gerrards Cross is introducing l'escargot onto its menu for a limited period from next Thursday.

Sitting in the Café Rouge, your mind could be tricked into thinking you were in the heart of Paris not Station Road, Gerrards Cross, with its cream-nicotine coloured walls and its café style tables and chairs. Even Kate, the manageress, has a strong foreign accent but she tells me she is from Poland and not France. My husband and I went along to try l'escargot. As we do not eat meat, the chef prepared the snails in a herb butter sauce with mushrooms. It was very tasty, very garlicky and totally French. If you enjoy eating meat it also comes with ham.

For our main meal we indulged in a French speciality - seafood stew wrapped in a light pastry. It was flavoursome and quite delicious. Then we completed our meal with a traditional French dessert - crème brûlée.

The Café Rouge is a casual and friendly eating house and all the staff have a pride in the restaurant and want to make their customers happy.

The Plats Chauds are all traditional French dishes including boeuf bourguignon, confit de canard and moules du Café Rouge. If you just want a quick snack - there are baguettes with all kinds of delicious fillings. And for those who want to have a petit dejeuner, you can indulge in real French treats, including croque au saumon fumé or crepe or oeufs Bénédicte.

And when the weather warms up again, there is an attractive dining area outside.

Café Rouge encourages children to dine, and to have a French experience, they even supply a colouring book written in French and English.
