I HAVE a new favourite pizza topping after going to a great new café in Cookham, which is offering freshly baked pizza cooked in front of you in their wood fired pizza oven.

Pizza Dreams Café opened at the end of last year in Station Hill and manager, Ian Roff, said they have been getting a great response from locals. And I can see why.

The café has a relaxed, casual feel about it and the food is simple- but brilliantly done.

I went for the Oriental Duck pizza, which is now my favourite topping. It was such a nice change from the processed, undistinguishable meat with cloying cheese you can sometimes get.

Instead, there were slithers of duck, chopped spring onion, hoi sin sauce and grated, creamy mozzarella. All for the modest price of £9. It is cooked in the wood fired oven, which results in a light crispy base.

They are big pizzas with generous topping. You can have a smaller size for £3 less.

My friend, Kat, went for the Four Cheese pizza (£10), which was oozing with grated mozzarella, buffalo mozzarella, creamy goat's cheese and rich gorgonzola. She loved it- the topping was evenly distributed on the evenly baked base, and had a good mix of light and strong cheeses.

We shared garlic bread, which was divine and had it with cheese (£4).

It was served on a pizza base and had a good smattering of creamy cheese, with a kick of garlic. There is a great choice of vegetarian options, and there are also two pizzas without cheese and three with a creme fraiche base rather than tomato.

They also do gluten free pizza bases and a takeaway service is available. The oven is in the centre of the café, which is a great focal point.

The green décor with wooden tables and quirky wall hangings make it a great place to just relax in.

Manjit Jaspal, who runs Penn Festival, met Ian and his team at Penn Fest and Let's Rock The Moor, where they take their mobile pizza making company.

They talked about opening a café for two years, and at the end of last year Pizza Dreams opened.

Ian said they have pushed the start of their festival season back to May to make sure everything has settled in at the café.

For starters we shared Italian Olives, served with focaccia, balsamic and extra virgin olive oil (£3). The green olives were quite large and were quite dry, which I liked, as the emphasis on the taste was on the olive and not the dressing it was in.

The extra virgin oil was light and tasty and the right amount to dunk the four slices of the focaccia in.

Other options for starters were risotto balls, cured meats and a soup of the day. We did go for dessert, even after all that.

I had Mini deep fried chocolate and marshmallow ravioli for £4.

It sounds strange but it was delicious- there were two ravioli pieces with a sweet casing, and inside was a gooey, delicious chocolate sauce.

It was served with the vanilla ice cream and was surprisingly light. Kat tried both the home made tiramisu (£4) and the salted caramel cheesecake (£4).

Both went down extremely well- the cheesecake was the right texture with a rich creamy filling, which was balanced well with the salted seasoning and the perfectly cooked caramel. She also enjoyed the beautifully presented tiramisu, but which did not live up to the decadence of the cheesecake.

It's always great to have a new addition to somewhere like Cookham, which will bring something different to the area, especially when the pizza is just so good. For more details go to www.pizzadreamscafe.co.uk
