G'RILLERS is a fantastic addition to High Wycombe's town centre. It serves great quality food with an African twist in a relaxed and happy atmosphere. To make it even better it is an independent.

I had walked past the new eatery in White Hart Street, which opened last November, a number of times but had not managed to pop in yet.

The atmosphere once you step inside is really good- with laid back music playing in the background, relaxed lighting and a friendly, happy welcome from owner Umar Mirza.

The 26-year-old, who was training to be a lawyer, opened up the coffee shop and grill house with business partner Adnan Ali, who is a doctor.

The ex-Royal Grammar School boys said the restaurant takes its inspiration from Africa - with specially sourced African coffee beans, spices and ingredients to flavour their drinks, steaks and burgers.

I really liked the place's décor with orange adorning the walls, exposed brick work and plants sitting neatly in boxes.

It was pretty busy for a Tuesday night- the place is open from 9am to 11pm- there were people both eating and just enjoying a coffee. Once you decide what you want, you order up at the counter.

There are a range of appetisers and two soups, if you want to go for a starter. My friend, Matt and I went for the Garlic Ciabatta £2.45 and G'rilled Chicken Pops £2.95.

It was really good garlic bread- the perfect amount of garlic and not too overpowering with just the right amount of butter so it was not greasy.

The two chicken pops on skewers are served in a home made sticky BBQ baste. The presentation of both dishes was great.

The chicken was succulent and had that lovely grilled taste, which was emphasised by the sweet BBQ sauce.

All food is home made on the premises from the range of sauces and the crunchy slaw.

Umar's dad is of Ugandan heritage, which is where the African inspiration comes from.

His grandmother speaks Swahili and with her knowledge they hope to have more authentic dishes as specials.

Matt had the spiced Maziwa Chai to drink. It is from an old family recipe. It normally takes three hours to brew but Umar has managed to create the same flavour with the coffee house's steamer.

It was really good Chai- a slightly stronger taste than I am used to but had a great kick of cinnamon in it. There is also ginger and cardamom in it.

For the mains there are six burger options, two salads and grilled meat dishes.

I went for the G'rilled Mince Lamb Burger which is £5.95 on its own or £7.45 with one side and £8.95 for two. It is made from 100 per cent lamb, brushed with mint sauce and layered with Zulu mayo and leafy salad.

It was a great burger served in a wholemeal bun. The lamb was beautiful- just the right thickness- and succulent and juicy with a great flavour.

For sides I had the Viungo dusted chips, which had a tangy kick, and slaw, which was brilliant with fresh, crunchy veg in a creamy sauce.

Matt has the four lamb chops (£5) with a side of Mukimo Mash (£1.50 extra). The lamb is dried with spices overnight then goes on the grill and basted with Joto Moto- their warm and fiery African spice baste.

The lamb chops were well cooked and served pink. Matt was impressed by the quality and the flavour.

The mash was really well done- very buttery and just tasted great with the added vegetables.

There are also a selection of desserts- including a range of milkshakes for £3.45.

I had the G'rillers mess, £3.95, which combines slices of banana with coconut shavings, ice cream, fresh cream and crispy meringue, drizzled with honey. I loved it. The banana made a refreshing change to the usual berries and the sweetness of the honey and the lovely creaminess of the ice cream from Lacey's Family Farm made it a real treat.

Matt had the Chokoloti Brownie, which is severed with ice cream, cream and chocolate sauce- it was a great brownie with a gooey centre and the sauce just added the right amount of sweetness.

G'rillers is aiming to bring a bit of life back to the town centre and I can really see it working.

The food offers something different for people, yet tastes great, and with the friendly atmosphere it is a great place to go with family and friends. Go to www.facebook.com/grillershw for more information.
