Spectacular musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, is making its return to South Bucks tonight with a dazzling show at the Aylesbury Waterside.

Starring former Eastenders actor Matt Lapinskas as the Pharoah and X Factor finalists Lloyd Daniels as Joseph and Amelia Lily as the Narrator, the dazzling show retells the biblical story of Joseph, his eleven brothers and the coat of many colours.

Matt will be donning his sparkling Elvis outfits and wig once again as he reprises his role as the Pharaoh.

The 26-year-old joined the cast last year, making his musical theatre debut with Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s critically-acclaimed fun family show, which is now the UK’s longest running musical.

Despite becoming a household name as Anthony Moon in Eastenders, Matt says theatre has always been something he wanted to pursue.

“I've always had a passion for theatre and probably more so for musical theatre, so I'm having a great time with Joseph. It was definitely something I wanted to venture into after Eastenders and Dancing on Ice.

“I love playing the Pharaoh; it’s a great role that I really enjoy. He’s such a fun character.”

Matt says he was more than happy to reprise the role of The Pharaoh, the most powerful man in Egypt who has a penchant for dressing as Elvis.

“It’s a really fun role to play. I get to go on stage and pretend like I'm Elvis. The Pharaoh is quirky, he’s very over the top and dramatic, but underneath all that I'm sure there is someone in there that just wants to be loved.”

The award-winning show has garnered rave reviews and standing ovations across the country and Matt says it’s unsurprising.

“It really is a wonderful show. It’s just a fun-filled evening of entertainment for the whole family. It’s an all-singing, all-dancing extravaganza and audiences always sing and dance along and leave with a smile on their face.”

And with unforgettable songs like Any Dream Will Do and Those Canaan Days, glitzy costumes, special effects and a dazzling set, it’s not hard to see why the show has become an international hit with people of all ages.

“I enjoy all my musical numbers because they're so full of energy. The mega mix at the end is really good, mostly because I don’t have to do it and I can just sit and enjoy it! But really, it’s a great part of the show. It’s so energetic and colourful and the audience love it.”

A new addition to this year’s tour comes in the form of X Factor finalist Amelia Lily. The singer, who finished third in the talent show in 2011, has joined the cast in one of the main roles, the narrator.

As someone who has become quite at home in front of the bright lights of the theatre, how does Matt think she is coping with her new role?

“It’s a tough role to take on, but I think she’s got it under control now. We’ve all taken her under our wing and she’s getting used to it. The narrator is a big role to play but she’s doing great, she’s done really well so far.”

As the tour has taken the cast the length of the country, from Plymouth to Edinburgh and from Southport to Llandudno, Matt could be forgiven if he didn’t enjoy touring, but the star is adamant that he loves being on the road.

“I do love touring. It’s good because you get to see a lot of the country and see some friends along the way and you get to see some beautiful parts of the country like Bath and then some places I would never even think to go, like Bridlington.

“It helps that all the cast get on so well, we’re like a big family and we all enjoy what we do. It’s a great feeling going to work, which is always good.”

Despite making his name on television, Matt admits there’s no adrenaline rush like performing live in front of a theatre audience.

“I do love both acting on stage and on TV. Being on TV is fantastic. Being on Eastenders was amazing; it was like going onto a film set every day.

“You get such an adrenaline rush performing live on stage though, it’s such a buzz and the reaction from the audience really gets me going when I'm on stage. The energy and the rush you get from performing on stage is amazing, it just makes you feel alive. It’s different from anything else you could ever imagine.”

So if you’re wondering whether or not to buy tickets, Matt thinks you won’t be disappointed if you do come along.

“It’s the best night out you could have. It’s a show for all ages, whether you’re eight or 80. It’s a proper fun filled night. It’s a show that everyone loves because you’re guaranteed to leave singing and dancing and with a smile on your face.”
