Slaughter defends actions
A LABOUR MP who was accused of hypocrisy after voting with the Government on Post Office closures has hit back at the Conservatives.
Andy Slaughter, MP for Ealing, Acton and Shepherds Bush, defended his decision to vote down a Tory motion calling for Government to suspend the compulsory closure of sub-post offices.
He said: "I'm just simply not prepared to support a Tory motion which is dishonest and hypocritical. "Their position is they're just not prepared to put in the subsidy the government has put in.
"It would take £2m on top of what they offered to keep the post offices open. I have some regrets about that but the important thing on this issue is that no one is prepared to sustain the current system."
Last week, Richard Barnes, London Assembly member for Ealing and Hillingdon, called for Mr Slaughter to apologise for the way he voted.
Mr Slaughter said: "It's just a bit of politicing, which you're entitled to do when you're in opposition but you have to face the consequences. They don't even have the support of the post masters."
He claimed the current proposals would see the closure of a disproportionately large number of Post Offices in his constituency compared to other parts of the country.
He said, on average, one in eight are closing across Britain, one in four across London and one in two in Ealing, Acton and Shepherds Bush.
He also accused Post Office Ltd of making "school boy errors" when they drew up the plans.
He said: "In W14 they are telling people to go to a Post Office which closed two months ago. We have got to get down hand to hand with them and tackle them on the detail."

"We have got to get down hand to hand with them and tackle them on the detail."
Wouldn't it have been sensible to get the detail BEFORE voting to allow the closure programme?
It was Labour that allowed competitors to 'cherry-pick' the delivery services and remove the Post Office monopoly. Losing these bulk high-value services means of course that the business cannot subsidise vital services to over 1000 rural communities.
Perhaps, having claimed that the opposition "don't even have the support of the post masters" Mr Slaughter would like to name those postmasters who are actually in favour of losing their livlihoods when their businesses are forced to close.

If this Government had not stopped Pension Payments, Family Allowance, Disability and all the other social Payments plus Road Fund Licence, Television Licence being dealt via the Post Offices they would be still viable.
But Nu Labour supports the Banks and WH Smiths.
To hell with the People who cannot drive or their bus is only once a week.

Just like the rest of the scumbags in Westminster- he's too scared to rock the boat and lose the "nice little earner" he's on!
