Shakes sends Bees crazy

Ricky Shakes grabbed a brace as Brentford eased to a 2-0 win over Wrexham at Griffin Park yesterday.

The victory, secured in bitterly cold and snowy conditions, kept the Dragons marooned at the bottom of League Two as their survival hopes took a turn for the worse.

The Bees opened the scoring after half an hour when Alan Connell's effort was parried by Gavin Ward but Shakes followed in to head home.

The visitors suddenly came to life and almost equalised from Simon Spender's 40-yard free-kick which amazingly bounced down and crashed off the crossbar.

But the killer second goal after 81 minutes ended the Dragons' chances of a point. Connell and Shakes combined to good effect again with the winger drilling a low shot beyond Ward and into the net.

Brentford manager Andy Scott said: "It was a scrappy game but with those conditions it was always going to be.

"I was delighted to see Ricky get those two goals and hopefully he'll now get a few more.

"We now need to go to Grimsby tomorrow and show that we can put back to back wins together which we haven't done for a while."
