Mixed reaction to bar's licence
THE decision to extend a bar's opening hours has provoked a mixed reaction from residents.
Libertaire, in High Street, Acton, has been given permission to stay open until 2.30am, from Monday to Thursday, and until 3.30am, on Fridays and Saturdays.
It will also be allowed to hold burlesque shows.
Trisha Nyame, 43, a mother of three, lives behind the bar, in Gloucester Road, and the rooms at the back of her house look down on to its fire escape.
She said she is worried about the type of customers who might be attracted by the burlesque shows.
She said: "It's not good. There are loads of people who go round the back and do drugs and drink alcohol and make noise.
"Some times I can't sleep because they're playing music too loud. 1am is enough but 3.30am is not on."
She added: "I would object to the burlesque shows what with having kids around. It would bring horrible people to the area."
But Susan Baird, 45, a mother of two, who lives next door, said she was prepared to give the management a chance as long they made sure the club did not make too much noise.
She said: "My only worry is if the back doors get opened then the noise will be louder. I worry about the kids because they have school in the morning.
"But from what I've heard the managers seem like they have everything in order.
"I was a bit concerned about the burlesque shows but there's nothing we can really do about what goes on inside."
Mandy Graham, 39, also of Gloucester Road, said: "I don't mind as long as they can contain the noise. We are mainly concerned about the sound.
"I do like the idea of them opening something different because you never get live bands here anymore.
"It looks really nice, it doesn't look like the sort of place that would take scum in."
The bar's management originally applied for permission to open from 9am to 9am from Monday to Saturday and to hold striptease and pole dancing shows.
But the application attracted fierce opposition from residents, with a 570 signature petition submitted to Ealing council and 99 individual complaints.
The terms of application were then changed, and the new licence was agreed at a meeting of the council's Licensing Sub-Committee on Wednesday, March 19.
