Clerk jailed for 16 months
A CLERK who stole £26,000 by forging cheques made out to herself has been jailed for 16 months.
Donna Lambourn, 42, from Slough, pleaded guilty to defrauding Team Support Services Ltd, in High Street, Acton, eight times between April and September last year.
She was sentenced at Isleworth Crown Court today.
The court heard how she had heavy debts which she paid off using money stolen from the company.
James Edenborough, her defence lawyer, said she was facing the possible death of her partner from cancer at the time and was hoping to repay the money with the life insurance.
The Judge, Recorder Amanda Pinto QC, told her: "You began working for this firm as a temporary clerk and then became a full member of staff as a bought ledger and cashier' in March last year. You immediately began abusing that position of trust. You had the cheque book but did not have the authority to sign cheques.
"But in September the managing director became aware of your activities and you were confronted. You shrugged your shoulders."
Gavin Pottinger, lawyer for the prosecution, said another cheque for £7,500 was found, torn up, on the same day she was confronted by her manager.
When the fraud emerged, Lambourn was sacked and arrested after asking to continue working and repay the money.
But the judge noted that she had only repaid £300 so far despite being in employment.
She said only prison could be justified, as Ms Lambourn wept in the dock.
