Tributes as councillor steps down

COLLEAGUES have paid tribute to a leading Labour councillor who yesterday announced she will leave the council.

Councillor Sonika Nirwal said she was stepping down to concentrate on raising her young family.

Ealing North MP Steve Pound, said: "Sonika has been a dedicated councillor for Greenford Broadway. She's worked very hard for local people. I regret this decision but entirely understand it.

"I wish her all the best with the new addition to her family and look forward to when she will be able to return to a more central role in the Labour Party."

Councillor Brian Reeves, Ealing Council's Labour group chief whip, said: "Sonika has been an excellent group leader during challenging political times. She has kept the group focused and provided sensible leadership.

"I think her parenting skills have often been put to good use. We will miss her but understand that her family responsibilities are changing and wish her well for the future."
