Police are appealing for witnesses after a suspected arson attack destroyed part of Coulsdon's Cane Hill Hospital estate on Tuesday.

Officers believe the fire, which broke out at about 2.30pm last Tuesday, was started deliberately. A derelict single storey building, covering a 300 sq metre area, was completely destroyed by the fire.

Four fire engines and 20 firefighters from Purley, Wallington, Croydon and Mitcham arrived to put out the flames soon after 2.45pm and brought the fire under control at about 4.50pm after using hydraulic platforms to attack the flames from above.

Police were forced to close part of Brighton Road at the junction with Lion Green Road while fire crews fought to put out the flames. Surrounding roads were still cordoned off on Tuesday evening.

Four teenagers were caught acting suspiciously on CCTV cameras in a nearby car park before the fire.

Investigating officer PC David Beveridge said: "Anyone who noticed anything suspicious in the area at around 2.30pm should contact Croydon CID on 020 649 0089 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
